The wonderful thing about working with super chunky yarn is speed – blankets grow inches at a time, and hats, scarves and cowls can be created in an evening. It’s also a wonderful weight yarn for learning to crochet. Stitches are clear, hooks are easy to hold – it’s a great way to start!

When we talk about super chunky, or super bulky yarn, we mean yarn that needs a hook of 8mm and above – something that is fat, squishy and gorgeous, where the stitches are defiantly big with fantastic definition. Extreme crochet is worked with a hook of 20mm upwards, often with giant yarn or three or four strands of super chunky worked together.

I’ve found a few fun patterns that use super chunky yarn, for when you want a super satisfying crochet hit!

This gorgeously fast blanket is made using stripes of super chunky colours, and Rico Essentials Big has a range of 28 shades that give you the option of creating a palette of colours to match most palettes. ┬áIf you’re a confident crocheter, you can just create stripes in half trebles or trebles – or granny stripes – or even work a granny square that just gets bigger and bigger with each round. A super chunky blanket works up in no time at all!

Crochet seed stitch gives a gloriously textured finish that shows off super chunky stitch definition beautifully. All you need to do is alternate double and treble crochet stitches (single and double for US makers) all the way along the row, and then alternate on the row back. This cowl can be made up in any super chunky yarn – perhaps even a variegated colour yarn for extra fun? Lang Yarns Mille Colori Big is a fabulous tonal super chunky that works up on a 9mm hook and changes colour all on its own!
