Free Colourful Festival Hat Tutorial!

Miki of Set Free my Gypsy Soul is here again with another colourful surprise!

festival crochet hat

For this month’s free pattern and tutorial, we will be using a really fun and easy crochet stitch that’s great for adding texture and creating patterns in your work! The criss-cross or crossed treble (US double) crochet stitch… It’s so easy, you simply work the treble stitches so that they form little crosses. You will see it in a written pattern as xtr, xtc and similar.

xtr festival hat stitch

This fun Boho-inspired festival hat is worked up in the round, creating a denser, firmer and woven-like fabric by using a slightly smaller hook than recommended and crocheting between the stitches.

You Will Need:

Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran 50g/85m balls:

  • A –  Pure Black (602) x 2
  • B –  Soft Fudge (610)
  • C – Rose Red (614)
  • D – Grass Green (630)
  • E – Mustard Yellow (624)
  • F – Marine Blue (634)
  • G – Blood Orange (620)

  • A 4mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • A yarn needle
  • Craft feathers

Abbreviations:

tc = treble crochet (US double)

dc = double crochet (US single)

ch = chain

st sp = stitch space – space between stitches

st = stitch

sl st = slip stitch

FO = fasten off

YrH – yarn over hook

puff stitch = to make a puff stitch, (yarn over hook, insert, pull through to the height of tc) 4 times into one st sp or ch sp to give 7 loops on the hook plus your original ch. To finish the stitch, yarn over hook and pull through all loops. Secure with sl st.

SP-2 = spike stitch over 2 rows; spike stitch in this pattern is an elongated double (US sc) crochet stitch. For SP-2, instead of inserting your hook directly into the round below, insert hook into the 2nd round below and complete stitch.

Criss-cross treble (xtc) = make a tc in the first st (or sp), wrap the yarn round hook to make a second tr, take the hook in front of the first tc made place it into the st (or sp) before the first tc going from front to back, yarn over hook and pull through st, you now have 3 loops on the hook, (yarn over and pull through 2 loops) twice.

WS = wrong side

Special Techniques:

To create a denser fabric, this hat is made by crocheting into the spaces between stitches using a slightly smaller hook than recommended.

Tension & Gauge:

A firm even tension is required for this project, but take care not to work too tightly to keep an even shape.

Gauge: 5 dc st/inch = 25 st 10cm x 10cm (4″ x 4″)

Finished Measurements:

22.5″ head circumference.

To make approx 2″ smaller, do not increase at ** For a child size hat, reduce your yarn weight and hook size.

To work the criss-cross or crossed treble, start by making your 1st treble stitch into the first st ( or st sp), wrap the yarn round hook to make a second treble, then take your hook “in front” of that first treble you just made and insert your hook through the st (or st sp) “behind” or “before” that 1st stitch you made. Now complete the stitch as normal. You now have a crossed treble (xtc, xtr).

As you continue along the row or round, miss one st or st sp then repeat – each time making your 2nd treble stitch of the “cross” into that missed space.

R32: Join yarn G into any st sp. Ch3 as 1st tc.

Tc into the st sp before the tc just made to form xtc.

Miss 1 st sp.

Rpt [tc, tc into missed st sp, miss 1 st sp] to end. Join with sl st and FO. [96 st]

R33: Rpt R31.

R34: Rpt R31 with yarn E

R35: Rpt R31 with yarn C.

R36: Rpt R31 with yarn B.

R37: Join yarn A into any st sp. Ch1 as 1st dc. 14dc, (2dc).

Rpt [15dc, (2dc)] to end. Join with sl st. [102 st]

R38: Ch1 as 1st dc. Dc into same st sp. Dc next st sp.

Rpt [(2dc), dc] to end. Join with sl st. [153 st]

R39 – 48: Ch1 as 1st dc.

Rpt [ dc ] into each st sp to end. Join with sl st. At end of R48, FO. [153 st]

R49: Turn work WS facing. Join yarn B into any st sp. Ch1 as 1st dc.

Rpt [ dc ] in each each st sp to end. Join with sl st.

R50: Ch1. Crab stitch to end. Join with sl st and FO.

Finishing:

Sew/Weave in ends with yarn needle.

Gather craft feathers into a little bundle. With yarn F, wrap together at the quills and knot tightly, leaving a long tail for sewing. Insert bundle up to the top of the quills into a sp between R32 xtc stitches at the side of the work from the outside. Sew into place to secure on the inside of the hat.

    I have prepared a pdf of this pattern, should anyone need a copy. It’s just a matter of where to post it to enable others to easily download?
