Unlike many flimsy tomes claiming to be complete guides to crochet, Mollie Makes Crochet really IS a complete guide  – each project is introduced with a fact sheet that tells you what you’ll need to know (or learn), materials to buy and page references for stitches and techniques used.  The projects begin very simply, from place mats and iPad cosies, to baby blanket edging  (pictured below) and flowers, lacework and a hexagon motif blanket.

The book begins with an essential, yet often omitted, section for “how to read a written crochet pattern” that clearly decodes pattern language.  This may seem a small point – but it’s genius – many crochet tutorial books are full of helpful information but forget that beginners don’t know how to read a written pattern.  In addition, there are clear pages explaining how to work from a chart, which some more visual crafters prefer.

Tension is covered next, with a full explanation of what tension is, how to identify your own tension – and why it matters! The first project, “Contrast-trim pocket placemats” offers a good start, working simple back-and-forth rows, changing colour and learning a simple stitch.  The projects are chosen well,  I particularly love the Russian Dolls and the Lacy Stripes Bolster, pictured below:

The techniques and stitches section is clearly laid out – with diagrams, written instructions and photos of live stitches. Basic stitch guides are followed by sections on how to shape your work (increase and decrease on the right and wrong sides), decorative stitches, lace and openwork and a gorgeous selection of edgings.

Mollie Makes Crochet brings crochet into the modern crafter’s home, full of ideas you’ll want to make that will inspire you to take your crochet further!  This is not the dusty granny square crochet of the 70s, this is vibrant, fun crafting using well polished techniques with a swoosh of vintage style!

Mollie Makes Crochet is an absolute must-have addition to your crafting books!  If you can’t think of anyone to buy it for, buy it for yourself!
