Welcome to the Acer CAL!
We’re thrilled to announce our new CAL with The Crochet Project! Join us and crochet Acer, a fabulous shawl inspired by the glorious tumbling leaves from an acer tree!
Joanne Scrace and Kat Goldin are both inspirational crochet designers, and together, they make up the dynamic duo that is The Crochet Project! We love their innovative approach to crochet, creating garments with a modern feel and vintage twist using fabulous yarn! Especially for our CAL, they have created a stunning shawl, Acer, which is a super versatile piece you can create for day or evening, wear as a shawl or scarf, and make up in 4ply or DK yarn!
The Acer shawl is perfect for adventurous beginners – you’ll learn some fantastic stitches, including:
- how to crochet small shells
- how to crochet bobbleshells
- working a four-row pattern repeat
- and blocking techniques.
If you’re new to crochet, or you’ve been working on granny squares and blankets, this is a wonderful introduction to creating crochet you can wear!
We know you love tutorials, so we have exclusive video tutorials to accompany the pattern! There are no increase stitches involved, Acer grows as you work a four-row repeat pattern that is easy to memorise.
To purchase the Acer Shawl pattern, click on the image below, and we’re offering Acer CAL subscribers 10% off the yarn to make it! Click the button to join the CAL!
Where do you start, choosing yarn for the Acer shawl? It can be worn in so many different ways, and the pattern is so adaptable, you can dress it up or dress it down! The pattern is adapted for 4ply or DK weight yarn and this is a perfect shawl for make-ahead gifts for Christmas and birthdays. Use a yarn with a little sparkle for evening, or rich autumnal tones for right now!
You will need:
4ply weight: a minimum of 437m (400 yards) of yarn, (approx 100g 4ply yarn) giving the finished shawl a wingspan of 115cm/45″ using a 4mm hook.
DK weight: a minimum of 500m (546 yards) of yarn, (approx. 100g DK yarn) giving the finished shawl a wingspan of 125cm/49″ using a 5mm hook.
Acer can be made larger by working the four row pattern until you reach the size required; to increase the indicated wingspan, you will need to use more yarn.
For a 4ply Acer:
We’ve used Cascade Heritage Silk for our 4ply shawl, which comes in 18 gloriously rich shades! The shawl pictured is in Italian Plum, 5633, but we love the Cascade colour palette! A perfect blend of 85% merino wool with 15% silk, this yarn drapes like a dream!
Cascade Heritage Silk in Red (5607), Limestone (5681) and Jade (5627).
Cascade Heritage Silk Paints – from left to right Fall Foliage (9801), Shadows (9751) and Water Lilies (9817).
For a DK weight Acer:
For our DK shawl, we’ve chosen Louisa Harding Amitola, pictured here above in Dark Rose (111). Amitola has all the hallmarks of a glorious Louisa Harding yarn – a stunning variegated palette with a slow colour repeat that creates gentle bands of colour that slide from shade to shade. This 80% merino wool, 20% silk blend has a beautiful drape and will keep you gorgeously warm too! You’ll need two balls of this yarn to make this shawl of the wingspan stated above.
Another stunning favourite is Malabrigo Arroyo, a stunning yarn from Uruguay, beautifully variegated into 30 sumptuous shades! 100% merino wool, this is a super soft, super warm yarn and would make a stunning Acer shawl!
We love (from left to right below), Lotus (120), Jupiter (049) and Fresco Y Seco (128).
