5 Sock Yarns to Make Your Toes Twitch!

Just started crocheting socks? Merion’s chosen some gorgeous yarn for you to try!

When you crochet your first pair of socks, you suddenly realise what careful work goes into them! They make the perfect gift, and I defy anyone to look down at their crocheted-covered feet and not smile at their own achievement!

Part of the fun is choosing the yarn and I’m here to give you a helping hand! Most socks are crocheted from sock yarn, which is usually 4ply in weight or finer. This makes for a sock that won’t be too thick or too bunchy inside a shoe or boot, but will still keep your feet warm and dry.

Natural fibres are best for socks because your feet will perspire, and anything 100% acrylic will not keep you warm or preserve your shoes from perspiration either. Most good sock yarns are either 100% natural fibre or a blend that incorporates 20-25% nylon or polyamide to help your socks stretch, keep their shape, and make them washable!

Crochet socks for every day

If you love everyday socks, and you want to crochet them in a plain yarn that is washable and designed especially for the purpose of sock making, you can’t go wrong with Regia 4ply.  In 29 shades, it’s the workhorse of sock yarns and will wash and tumble to your heart’s content.

Lang Yarns Merino 200 Bebe is another everyday yarn for socks, beautifully soft merino wool that’s machine-washable too. If you love more colour, Stylecraft Head Over Heels is a fabulous sock yarn that comes in some gorgeous self striping colourways full of rainbow sherbet sweetness and festival brights – a real joy to crochet and wear!

A little bit special …

For favourite socks that are crocheted for a gift or to peep out under some favourite Mary Janes, you could try Cascade Heritage Paints, a deliciously soft merino wool blended with 25% nylon. Variegated yarns like this are great fun for socks because they pattern gently all on their own, and this 100g skein is more than enough for a pair of socks!

If you love variegated yarn, Lana Grossa Meilenweit 100 Merino Print is another fabulous fun print yarn that will give your socks a modern stripe! I also love Coop Knits Socks Yeah!, it’s a deliciously bouncy merino with a shot of nylon that comes in a range of mineral pastel shades, and its super soft twist will show off your stitches to perfection!

A dash of bamboo!

Bamboo is a very popular ingredient in fibre blends for socks thanks to its naturally antibacterial properties. It’s super soft to wear, and combines nylon for stretch making it a perfect sock yarn!

Knit One Crochet Too Elfin Tweed is a magically soft yarn! It contains merino wool, llama and bamboo – a heady blend that is beautifully soft, and shot through with Donegal tweed neps. I can’t resist the Seafoam deep teal shade, but there are over 15 colours to choose from!

Rico Superba Bamboo Superwash is another variegated yarn that comes in 11 shades, and it has 50% wool and 25% bamboo synthetic fibre added along with 25% nylon – and the fun of this printed yarn is in the way the clever colourways stripe!

For special occasion socks!

Can there be such a thing as special occasion socks? Certainly there are yarns that are treats to crochet, and those are the yarns I’m including in this section!

Noro Silk Garden Sock is a dream of a sock yarn, with its clever variegated colourways. Eisaku Noro first created his yarns many years ago working along the principle that nature never gets colour combinations wrong. He blended colour and fibre to create his uniquely beautiful, instantly recognisable style, and Noro Silk Garden Sock is a fabulous yarn for special socks! It is a blend of wool, silk and mohair with some polyamide to help with the stretch and fit of your socks.

Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock yarn is a delicious blend of softest merino wool and nylon, and the solid and semi-solid shades are an absolute delight. This is luxury yarn at it’s most divine!
