Super Socks!

Crocheting socks may be new to some of you, but it’s a tradition well worth exploring!  Here are Merion’s picks from our fabulous independent designer patterns!

If you thought that making socks belonged only to the province of knitting, you can think again!  Our crochet hooks can whip up a pair of socks in no time, and I’ve found you three lovely pairs to make!  All these patterns have comprehensive instructions, and if you need to compare terminologies, you can use our handy Crochet Conversion Tables for UK & US terms.  A pair of socks makes a wonderful gift – to yourself or someone else – and handmade socks are worth a thousand pairs of shop-bought!

1. My First Crochet Socks by Cobbler’s Cabin

First Crochet Socks by Cobbler's Cabin on the LoveCrochet blog

It’s often easy to practise something new in miniature, so we’ll start with these fabulous socks for children.  Using mostly basic stitches (the only one you might not have tried is crocheting into the front and back posts of a stitch, but it’s simple, honest), these socks are crocheted from the toe up with no sewing up to do!  You’ll need a 3.5mm hook and some 4ply yarn!

You can’t go wrong with some Regia 4ply Color, a blend of merino wool and polyamide, which comes in 52 colourways!  Self patterning and easy to work with (and comfortable to wear), this yarn is perfect sock yarn because it is easy care and the polyamide will keep your socks in shape!  We love, below, from left to right, Snowflake Skimutze (7708), Snowflake Schneeanzug (7707) and Snowflake Schlitten (7712).

2. Orache Socks from The Crochet Project

We love all the patterns from The Crochet Project collections, and these socks come from the Botanics collection. Crocheted in a gorgeous Fyberspates 4ply yarn – we love Vivacious 4ply, which comes in 12 shades! We love, below from left to right, Lavender Haze (610), Tweed Imps (601) and Sea Green (606).

3. Mulled Wine Socks by Vicki Brown

We love Vicki Brown’s pretty openwork socks!  They come in three sizes and the pattern is written in both UK and US terminology. Worked toe-up with a solid sole and lacey top, these are bound to be a favourite for gifts, so get crocheting!

These gorgeous socks are also crocheted in Fyberspates Vivacious 4ply, we suspect in shade Spiced Plum (600), but just in case you fancied a change – you could try some gorgeous Susan Crawford Excelana 4ply, 100% Exmoor Blueface Sheep wool in 12 delicious shades. We are particularly partial to, below, from left to right, Damson Wine Limited Edition (DW), Nile Green (NG) and French Rose (FR).
