Chunky mittens tutorial

Get stripy with Kath Webber’s free chunky mittens crochet tutorial. 

As the weather in the Northern hemisphere cools down, it’s time to warm up with colourful hand-made accessories. These striped mittens are extra toasty in DMC My Boshi – a cosy and colourful yarn designed for the snowboarding season! Reduce the hook size for a smaller size and tighter fabric.

You will need:

My Boshi Original No1

DMC MyBoshi (70% acrylic, 30% wool, 50g/55mm) 1 ball each of Mint (127) and Neon Pink (182)
6mm Hook (I’m using KnitPro Waves 6mm)

Abbreviations: htr half treble; FPtr Front post treble; BPtr Back post treble; htr2tog htr 2 stitches together

Pattern – Make 2!

Thumbs

Using Mint yarn, make a magic ring to begin.

1. 1ch (does not count as a st), 8htr into ring, join with ss to close ring. Pull tail of magic ring to tighten. [8 sts]

2. Change to Neon Pink. 2ch, 1htr into each st around. Join with ss to 2-ch.

3. Change to Mint. 2ch, 1htr in each st around. Join with ss to 2-ch.

4. Change to Neon Pink. As round 2.

5. Change to Mint. As round 3.

6. Change to Neon Pink. As round 2. Fasten off yarn. [8 sts]

Hands

Using Mint yarn, make a magic ring to begin.

1. 1ch (does not count as a st), 8htr into ring, join with ss to close ring. Pull tail of magic ring to tighten. [8 sts].

Crochet mittens

2. 2ch (counts as 1htr throughout) 1htr in first st, (2htr into next st) 7 times, join with ss to 2-ch. [16 sts].

Crocheting mitten hands

3. 2ch, 1htr in each st around, ss to 2-ch to join. [16 sts].

4. 2ch, 1htr in next st, 2htr in next st, (1htr in each of next 2 sts, 2htr in next st) 4 times, 1htr in last st, join with ss to 2-ch. [21 sts].

Crocheting mitten hands

5. Change to Neon Pink yarn. Work as given for round 3.

6. Change to Mint yarn. As round 3.

7. Change to Neon Pink yarn. Work as given for round 3.

8. Change to Mint yarn. As round 3.

9. Change to Neon Pink yarn. Work as given for round 3.

10. Change to Mint yarn. As round 3.

11. Change to Neon Pink. Work as given for round 3.

Crochet mitten hands

12. Hold the thumb and mitten next to each other with the open ends facing upwards. Join in Mint yarn in mitten, then ss to next st on thumb.

Chunky mitten crochet

Make 2ch, then 1htr into each st around, join with ss to 2-ch. [28 sts].

13. Change to Neon Pink. Make 2ch, then 1htr in each of next 6 sts, tr2tog, 1htr in each of rem sts, then join with ss to 2-ch. [27 sts].

Fixing mitten hands

14. Change to mint. 2ch, 1htr in each of next 16 sts, htr2tog, 1htr in each of rem st, join with ss to 2-ch. [26 sts].

15. Change to Neon Pink. 2ch, 1htr in each of next 16 sts, htr2tog, 1htr in each of rem 7 sts, join with ss to 2-ch. [25 sts].

16. Change to Mint yarn. 2ch, 1htr in each of next 4 sts, htr2tog, 1htr in each of next 10 sts, htr2tog, 1htr in each of next 6 sts, join with ss to 2-ch. Fasten off mint yarn. [23 sts].

17. Change neon pink. 2ch, 1htr in each of next 3 sts, htr2tog, 1htr in each of next 9 sts, htr2tog, 1htr in each of rem 6 sts, join with ss to 2-ch. [21 sts].

18. 1ch, FPtr in next st.

19. BPtr in next st

20. Repeat steps 18 and 19 around, ss into first FPtr.

21. 1ch, (FPtr in next st, BPtr in next st) 10 times, join with ss to first FPtr. Fasten off.
