Introducing the Crochet Girl Gang CAL with Paintbox Yarns

We’re thrilled to introduce the Crochet Girl Gang CAL with Paintbox Yarns. Join us for a fabulous crochet-along with Potter & Bloom and Steel & Stitch!

Crochet along with us and make a beautiful blanket with a gorgeous geometric design! Bloggers and crochet designers Emma Potter from Potter & Bloom, and Emma Friedlander-Collins from Steel & Stitch have joined creative forces to design a thoroughly modern crochet blanket that will look deliciously stylish draped across your sofa.

Join our crochet-along with Paintbox Yarns and learn how to crochet different kinds of granny squares, from simple stitches to cables, special stitch borders, tassels and multi-colour pom poms. We have exclusive video tutorials and we’ll be celebrating, chattering and working alongside you on Facebook, Instagram and in our own fun Community too.

What is the Crochet Girl Gang?

Emma Potter, from Potter & Bloom explains: “The #crochetgirlgang is an online, mainly instagram, community of like-minded crochet addicts. If you browse the hashtag you will see that it is full of wonderful crochet makers, sellers, designers and yarn obsessed girls who just want to have fun, make stuff and be nice to one another.

“I created the #crochetgirlgang hashtag in March this year as a way to promote positivity, solidarity and respect in the rapidly growing online crochet community. I felt lucky to have a strong gang of supportive women cheering me on as I grew my crochet career, especially because sometimes social media, in particular instagram, can leave you feeling a little bit isolated and vulnerable.

It’s nice to know that there are people out there who will make you feel good about what you do and appreciate the hard work that goes into every creation. Sometimes just one person saying they love your picture can make all the difference to your day, especially if you’ve been having a bad one.

I wanted everyone to feel like that, to create an inclusive community where all the gang feels supported by their peers and even people who are new to crochet or new to Instagram can get their creations shared and applauded.

You don’t have to join the gang, there is no elaborate initiation ceremony, you don’t have to have a certain number of followers, nor is anyone excluded. All it takes to be in the gang is to use the hashtag whenever you post a crochet picture, enjoy looking at other people’s gorgeous crochet creations and maybe leave a positive, happy comment from time to time.”

The blanket!

Our fabulous blanket is crocheted in Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran using a 5mm hook. It measures 64″ x 38″ (162 x 96 cm) and you can choose from two borders, with pom-poms or tassels.

Emma Potter of Potter & Bloom has chosen a sweet pastel palette with gentle sherberts, perfect pinks and a pom pom edge!

Potter & Bloom began life as a blog, a sort-of crochet blog, and over time, Emma’s love of blastingly bright colour and crocheting granny squares took over, and she is now a freelance crochet designer/teacher/maker and the head honcho of the #crochetgirlgang movement. Emma’s designs can be seen in major UK crochet magazines and websites, and her fabulous YouTube video tutorials are a great first step to getting the whole world hooking.

Toasty warm autumn tones are Emma Friedlander-Collins’ inspiration to celebrate the season. Cleverly blended with a deep grey, mustard, orange and reds make this the cosiest blanket ever. The pack contains two balls each of: Mustard Yellow, Mandarin Orange, Blood Orange, Tomato Red and Red Wine, and six balls of Slate Grey.

You will need a 5mm crochet hook and tapestry needle for sewing up, and if you’d like to add Emma Potter’s gorgeous pom poms, a pom pom maker too!

Pick your palette!

Create your own colourway! The beauty of having your own Paintbox, is that you can pick your own palette! There are 60 fabulous shades to choose from in the Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran range, and for the CAL, you will need five accent colours plus one signature shade to border the squares.

Inspired by the beach? Choose aqua tones, sea greens and sandy yellows. Love the Northern Lights? Build a night sky shot through with neon green and purple hues. Monochrome? Naturals? Princess pinks? With a whole paintbox palette to choose from, you can create your dream colourway.

Our blog editor Merion loves late summer hedgerows, and decided to reflect the gentle greens and purples in her blanket, bordered with a misty grey – this is her hedgerow colourway! Which colours will you choose for your personal colourway?

Merion's colourway Crochet Girl Gang CAL

Merion’s hedgerow colourway includes shades Racing Green, Slate Green, Pistachio, Raspberry Pink and Rich Mauve, and a border shade of Misty Grey. Keep an eye on the blog to see how the colours come together.

  1. Darcie says:

HI I am really interested in doing this cal but right now I can not afford to buy a pack at once, ever since my car accident crochet helps to keep my mind off the things I am going through right now, sorry this was meant to ask two maybe three questions not for a pity party on my end. One can you buy paintbox yarn in Canada I have never seen it before, two what is Aran weight and three if I can not find paintbox yarn, what would be the next best kind of yarn for this?

    Thanks

    • sian says:

      Hello Darcie,

Oh dear we wish you well and a speedy recovery! We are the exclusive seller of Paintbox Yarns, and you can purchase them for delivery to Canada! Aran weight yarn is also known as Worsted weight, or 10ply, and you can absolutely purchase it as individual balls over a period of time 🙂
You can find the yarn here; http://www.lovecrochet.com/us/paintbox-yarns-simply-aran
If you weren’t keen on using Paintbox Yarns you could use perhaps Lion Brand Vannas Choice.

I hope that answers all your questions! 🙂

      • Darcie says:

thank you for being concerned and for the answers, its not that I am not keen on trying your yarn, I think its very pretty and would love to try it, I was just hoping it was sold in a store so I could touch it and look at the colors, plus its the not having the funds right now, so that’s why I was wondering what Aran was, so that if it was worsted weight, I might be able to use some of the yarn I already have sitting around at home. Also I should have asked the same question someone else did and that is if this CAL will cost anything besides getting the yarn of course.

        thanks again

        • sian says:

          Hello Darcie,

I completely understand 🙂 It’s great to have the chance to use up some of your stash too, and get that perfect colour combination!
The patterns and tutorial videos will be completely free and will be posted on our blog each Wednesday morning (GMT) from 26th October, we hope you can join in with us 🙂

    • Lori says:

I saw it on Amazon I think.

  2. Merion says:

    Hi Darcie!

So sorry to hear you’ve had such a tough time since your car accident – and I so hope that crochet is helping you – it can be a great way to relax, it’s very therapeutic.

The CAL is a really fun project, and in answer to your questions – aran is the weight of the yarn – you might be more familiar with the term “heavy worsted” – that is often used too. You’ll need a 5mm hook for this CAL, and we do ship our CAL packs to Canada! We have 25% off the packs until the 19th October too. If you’d rather use a different yarn, that’s absolutely fine too – any acrylic aran weight yarn would be a good substitute for Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran.

We’re sending you lots of soothing crochet best wishes – and hoping you come and join us crochet this lovely blanket! You can follow us on the blog and on Facebook too. Kindest wishes from Merion and the LoveCrochet team xxx

LOVE TO CROCHET, GRANDMA TAUGHT ME AT THE AGE OF 7, AND BEEN GOING LIKE MAD FOR 52 YEARS NOW…

  4. Janet Herburger says:

    Can’t wait.

  5. RoxAnne D. says:

I know that the idea is to do these as a group, but since I don’t have a lot of time to work on my crocheting projects, is the videos and instructions available long term? That if I were to sign up that I could do this at probably a slower pace?

I’m also new to this field, less than 6 months so I love the idea of having instructions and videos and being able to see how more experienced crocheters have their projects turn out and then I can make sure I am close.

    • sian says:

      Hi Roxanne,

They certainly will be available for the long term 🙂 You can access and work the pattern at your own pace.

  6. Dee Couvillon says:

Is there a cost to join this CAL? If so, I won’t be able to join but do hope everyone has a wonderful time.

    • sian says:

      Hello Dee,

There’s no cost for the pattern, you can buy the Paintbox Yarns colour pack for the CAL or you can choose your own yarns 🙂

  7. Susie Van Diver says:

Looking forward to doing this. I’ve watched from the ‘sidelines’ so to speak on other CAL projects, so this is my first time trying it. I absolutely LOVE granny squares so this is right up my alley. Let the blanket begin!

  8. Eileen Kainu says:

I am just learning to crochet…..is this hard?

    • sian says:

      Hi Eileen,

The CAL is perfect for beginners, and improver beginners. There will be some great tutorial videos and a wonderful chance for you to master some new crochet skills!

  9. Natalie says:

I’m not so keen on either of the colour pack combinations so I thought I would make up my own pack as suggested here. However, the 25% reduction does not show up. Is there a code or something to enter to benefit from the reduction?

    • Keri says:

I’m finding the same thing. Picked out my own color way, but can’t figure out how to get the discount.

      • sian says:

        Hi Keri,

The Paintbox Yarns are discounted individually too and should show the discounted price when added to the basket – is that showing up ok for you?

        • Keri says:

It wasn’t originally, but it’s showing now. Just placed my order – ready to start the CAL as soon as my goodies arrive! 😄

    • sian says:

      Hello Natalie,

The Paintbox Yarns are discounted individually too and should show the discounted price when added to the basket – is that showing up ok for you?

  10. Phillipa says:

Are the crochet terms/abbreviations in U.K or American?

  11. Myra says:

I have never done a CAL before either. I’m not sure how it plays out. Also I’m not very instagram/facebook savy. How do you do a hash tag? Can this CAL be done as a scrapghan? As like a couple of others I’m on a fixed income and can’t really afford to buy yarn right now but have had some yarn given to me. Thank You in advance for any info/help that you can give me.

    • sian says:

      Hello Myra,

We would love for you to join in with the CAL! Every Wednesday, starting on 26th October, we will be releasing a new part of the blanket pattern, along with great tutorial videos!
You can of course use yarns you already have – it’s wonderful to completely personalise the project too!
Hashtags are used on Twitter and Instagram to create a collection of everyone’s images in one place. The hash sign # is used, followed by a word or phrase 🙂

      I hope that helps!

  12. Tarsh Siebert says:

I’m having trouble signing up , says there is an error or missing link.

    • sian says:

      Hello Tarsh,

I’m sorry to hear that, the email alert sign up link seems to be working alright for me now, could you give it another go and let me know how you get on?

  13. Julie Coulson says:

I too cannot find how to obtain the 25% discount for choosing own colourway and I note this discount only applies until 19 October. I was hoping to try Merions colourway. Can you advise if we need a discount code please?

    • sian says:

      Hi Julie,

The Paintbox Yarns are discounted individually too and should show the discounted price when added to the basket – no code is needed for it to apply. Is that showing up ok for you?

  14. Emily says:

I have created my own colourway also and the discount is not appearing in my basket. I have also gone through to almost paying and the discount still hasn’t appeared.

    • sian says:

      Hello Emily,

The discount should show in your basket when purchasing 16 balls of the Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran. I’m so sorry to hear this isn’t appearing for you., I’ll have the website team look into it.

      • Mel says:

I can’t get this to work either and have been trying for days. I’ve selected the greens and greys from the third option featured but even with 16 balls the discount doesn’t show. I’m a bit disappointed that I’ll miss out.

        • sian says:

          Hello Melinda,

          I’m so sorry about this.
I’ve been informed this has all now been fixed so you should see the discount when you add 16 balls or more of the Paintbox Yarns Aran to the basket – this discount has now been extended to 26th October. Please do let us know if you have any further problems by emailing info@lovecrochet.com

  15. Caroline says:

Since the colour pack has sold out and I have most of the colours anyway but in dk. When this have any effect?

    • sian says:

      Hello Caroline,

I believe the colour packs are now back in stock 🙂 Using a DK yarn will give you a much smaller blanket as the tension will not be the same. I’d advise purchasing the Aran where possible.

  16. Heidi says:

The discount on own colourway isn’t appearing for me either 🙁

    • sian says:

      Hello Heidi,

I’m so sorry the discount isn’t applying 🙁 I’ve got our tech team looking into this and I’m hoping we can have it resolved for you all as soon as possible!

  17. Melissa says:

I like blue tones, but I’m not good at picking out colors, any suggestions? And what would be the border color?

  18. Mindy Smith says:

I would like to join you all but have a question about the yarn, do you have to use the yarn you are talking about or can you use another type of yarn?

  19. Laurie says:

My first CAL My yarn arrived today and the colors are amazing.I picked the autumn color scheme. Now I can’t wait to get started

  20. Brenda says:

Hi, I have only just seen this site, and wondered if it’s too late to get my yarn pack in time to join CAL. I’m also new at crocheting, and I live in London. Also, I’m not very savvy with facebook etc.

    • sian says:

      Hello Brenda,

You do still have time! Follow the links in the blogpost to purchase your favourite of the colour packs, or pick your own colour way of 16 balls of Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran and receive the same 25% discount!

  21. Karen Ciullo says:

So excited about this CAL. Yarn and hook are ready! Will the weekly pattern releases come to our email or should I come directly to this site for the patterns!

Woo Hoo can’t wait for Friday

    • sian says:

  22. Karen Ciullo says:

Oh my gosh, I thought it started on the 28th! Woo Hoo, gotta get part 1.

    Thank you!

  23. Melissa says:

I didn’t receive my yarn or any instructions yet.

  24. Erica Burgess says:

Oooooh, looking coward to the cal, got the autumn yarn pack, beautiful colours, but where’s the pattern? Can’t wait to start .

  25. Erica Burgess says:

    *forward*

  26. nancy lisak says:

Where is the first pattern? I have a 5 day weekend and want to start Friday.

  27. Carol audin says:

I ordered my color pack on 8 November, and it was delivered safely on 15 November! I love the yarn, not seen or used it before. Usually I use DK, so this will work up much quicker! Many thanks for the pattern and the opportunity to purchase the pack. By the way, I live in New Zealand where it is supposed to be coming into Summer. Not looking anything like it yet! Regards to all,

  28. Wende Wise says:

Hi, I just stumbled upon this great blanket patter. I know the dates have passed. Can I still purchase the pattern and the yarn? I would love to make this blanket! Thank you in advance for your help.

  29. louisa says:

Love the whole concept of this. We are going to be using the CAL in the crochet workshops I run over the next few months and we are all very excited!

  30. Mary Jane Klenk says:

I’m finding a lot of mistakes in the patterns…is there an updated, corrected pattern all in one spot?

  31. Mary Jane Klenk says:

I’m finding a lot of mistakes in the pattern. Is there a revised, updated version?

    • sian says:

      Hello Mary Jane,

Oh dear I’m sorry to hear that! Which part have you found mistakes in? I’d be happy to take a look!
