So long summer…
Emma of Steel & Stitch reflects on the end of summer and shares a lovely selection of her favourite yarn colours inspired by the season.
I love this time of year. It’s still warm enough to have just a cardi to hand, the bushes and hedgerows are going berserk, throwing out the last of their berries and blooms, and the promise of chill evenings and cosy crochet time are just on the horizon. And if you’re cursed, ahem, blessed with children then you know that they’ll be safely tucked in, back at school and you can get on with aaaaaall the things you couldn’t for the last six weeks. September is literally the best.
With the turn in the season, there is something really satisfying about reflecting on the summer that’s starting to fade. I never seem to settle down to a big crochet make over these few months. Sometimes the heat alone can be too much to be sat under a work in progress, with sweaty fingers struggling to keep the yarn tension. So this summer has been about making quick but dramatic customisations, using lovely, light or colourful yarns.
Featured yarn: Hollyhock Pink
MillaMia Merino – Plum (162), DMC Myboshi – Raspberry (139), Cascade Pacific – Honeysuckle Pink (51), Cascade Pacific – Yellow (12), Stylecraft Classique Cotton DK – Soft Lime (3663)
There have been super soft cottons that are perfect for bringing life back to long forgotten tops. Gorgeous silks that have added deep colours and beautiful texture to the edges of boring tees, and some good old-fashioned acrylics, in completely awesome neons that are just so flipping cool you can’t fail to make something amazing with them! What’s really nice about this, is when I put those things on, I’ll get a moment of being right back in the summer when I made them. So it won’t matter how dark and cold it gets, I’ll always have some sunshine with me.
One of the other things I like to do is capture the colours of the season by making yarn sample cards. It’s our brightest, boldest and most boisterous time of year, and there has been some really vibrant and bold colour inspiration to be had. All summer I kept refilling a little vase of nasturtiums and sweetpeas from the garden, and loved the combination of the hot pinks and bright orange so much, I’ve matched the colours to my yarn stash and now have them for inspiration any time I want them. Here’s a little round up of just some of the gorgeous colours that August gave us, I hope you find them inspiring too.
